Sophia Tejeda paces women’s golf on the first day of the Cardinal Challenge
BEAUMONT – Second year Sophie Tejeda paced the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Women’s Vaqueros Golf Team as they tied for third after day one of the Cardinal Challenge on Monday at Beaumont Country Club.
Tejeda posted a two-round 152 total after opening with a first-round 77 and then following with a three-for-75 in the second. Tejeda is seven shots behind Mathilde Brogens of Tarleton who posted rounds of 71 and 74 for a two-round total of 145.
Second year Mercedes Vega is in 14and after day one with a total of 168 in two rounds. Vega opened with a first round 78 before posting a second round 90.
Graduate student Rachel You is in 15and place with a two-round total of 169 after posting rounds of 87 and 82 as a junior Blayke Van Houten is in 16and with a two-round total of 171 after opening with a first-round 91 before shaving 11 shots with a second-round 80.
Freshman and graduate of Edinburgh High School Madi Ozuna is in 19and after day one with a two-round total of 179 after carding rounds of 87 and 92 and a freshman Catherine Flores is in 20and with a total of 181 in two rounds after posting a first round of 94 and improving in the second with an 87.
As a team, the Vaqueros sit in third place with a two-round total of 656 after opening with a first-round 329 and posting a 327 in the second. Lamar holds the day one lead with a two-lap total of 623 after laps of 316 and 307.
The Vaqueros will be back on the course for the final round on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
