UAB becomes official site and partner of Birmingham 2022 World Games
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will play a major role in hosting the 2022 World Games, the local organizing committee said after signing a large-scale cooperation agreement.
The competitions for the Birmingham 2022 World Games will take place across the entire UAB campus.
BBVA Field, UAB’s men’s and women’s football stadium, will host lacrosse.
The tug of war action will take place at the UAB athletics facilities, and racquetball and squash will be staged on the courts and gymnasiums of the University Recreation Center.
“The UAB is ideally located and ready to support the World Games and ensure Birmingham makes the most of this great and unique opportunity to showcase our city and state to the world,” said Ray L. Watts, president of the UAB. ‘UAB.
“The UAB community looks forward to being gracious hosts to athletes and spectators, and our campus and its facilities provide a beautiful and modern setting that will leave a positive and lasting impression.”
In addition to hosting competitions, the UAB will also serve as the base sponsor for the 2022 World Games Legacy Memorial and the main sponsor of the Athletes’ Village, which will provide accommodation in UAB residences for athletes, coaches and officials.
UAB Medicine will be the main sponsor of athletics and spectator medical services at the 2022 World Games venues.
The university will also provide language services to international athletes and visitors.

The World Games are a multi-sport event organized every four years by the International World Games Association under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee.
The 11th edition of the World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama from July 7 to 17, 2022 involving 3,600 athletes from more than 30 sports and 100 countries, having been displaced from 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
